Vacation Week: Things to do with the kids!

February 22, 2018

It’s February Vacation week and here are some suggestions of fun things to do with the kids!

Staycation! Located right on D Street in Southie, Aloft and Element are the perfect hotels to book for your family to have a sleepover including swimming pools! If you live in Boston you get a resident discount rate for both hotels, so why not surprise the kids with some overnight family fun!

Skating by! The Murphy Rink is offering public skating through the winter.  If you don’ t have skates, don’t worry.  You can rent them from Teddy – he is the skate master (and local legend).  If your blades are dull, he’ll sharpen ’em up for you! So bundle up the family and head to the rink! Hours of Public Skating during school vacation are Tuesday-Friday 10am-3pm.

Lace up those bowling shoes! Head to East Broadway to Southie Candlepin and bowl a few strings at this old school institution! They are open daily 12pm-7pm.  Are big balls more of your thing? Kings Dining & Entertainment in the Seaport District offers all kinds of fun! This new hot spot features 20,000 square feet of fun at 60 Seaport Boulevard complete with 16 lanes of big ball bowling, a “bar-Kade” filled with video games, pool tables, foosball a giant four-man air hockey table, shuffle board, and hoops!

Let’s go to the movies! We have a new luxury theater in the Seaport District! The ShowPlace ICON is now open at One Seaport (also home to Tuscan Kitchen and Kings). The new luxury theater spans 44,000 square feet, boasts 10 auditoriums and seats 855 guests in total. Auditoriums range from the 131-seat ICON-X premium large format room to a 63-seat auditorium, which gives moviegoers the feeling of being in their own private screening room. You can also order beer and wine while you watch your movie!

Free admission! The ICA is offering free admission all day on Presidents’ Day! A perfect chance to check out their much anticipated landmark exhibition, Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today!

It’s Children’s Winter Festival Time on the Boston Common! On Wednesday, February 21 partake in some winter fun including the 30-foot-high inflatable Everest Climb N Slide, a snow maze, a 45-foot-long toboggan tunnel, and free skating (and rentals!) on the Frog Pond.

Go Wild at the Zoo! Franklin Park Zoo is offering fun programs for the week for first through sixth graders! The fun takes place February 20th through February 23rd.

Books about ballet! Story time with the Boston Ballet at Southie Library Children and families are welcomed once a month to hear stories about a famous ballet or dancer. The story time is also supplemented with a  movement experience that highlights major themes of the story. All story times are led by Boston Ballet faculty dance educators. This program is for children ages 2 and up. Younger children will need parental supervision. Takes place on Wednesday at 10:30am.

Build your brain! Have fun and build brains during February break week! Children will discover the concepts of physical science through hands-on discovery. Snack is included. Limited to 12 children each session; participants may attend all 4 sessions or pick one or more. Please register in advance with the children’s librarian (lmiller@bpl.org). Suggested for ages 4-7. Caregivers may participate, watch, or relax in the library. Takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1pm.
